Virgil van Dijk reserved praise for striker Jay Rodriguez after his second-half double downed Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Saints produced a stirring comeback to beat their near neighbours, with Ryan Bertrand getting the other goal to level proceedings.
And van Dijk, who was captain for the day, felt Rodriguez’s brace was more than merited.
“I’m very pleased and I told him as well. It is well-deserved, he worked hard, you saw it also the games against Middlesbrough,” said van Dijk.
“I saw the numbers after the game and he did a lot of high-speed running. And he worked hard.
“It is well deserved, he’s a great guy and great striker and hopefully he can keep on doing it after Christmas.”
The result lifted Saints into 7th place in the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotpsur the next side to visit St Mary’s.
van Dijk continued: “It gives you that extra good feeling to go into Christmas with a win especially in here and it is also very important for the ranking at the moment so it gives you an extra good feeling.
“Now it is time to relax a bit, it has been busy the last month so we need to get our rest and get ready for Spurs.”
