“Today he was deserving of his goals. This is fantastic for him, because he can do strong work for the team and finally score two goals.

“It was a strong game for him, we are happy for him. This has got to give him the confidence. I hope he can continue with this good work.”

Puel introduced Steven Davis for young midfielder Harrison Reed at the interval, with the game level at 1-1 and he was also pleased with the influence the Northern Ireland international.

Puel added: "The second-half was perfect because I think we had a good balance in the midfield. Steven can bring a strong energy on the pitch and also calm with his experience.

"It was a good answer for all of the team, with a good level. Some players progress on their level in the second half, with the possibilities given by Steven Davis."
