Claude Puel has backed Jay Rodriguez to continue his good work after scoring twice in the 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth.
The forward marked his 200th career league appearance in style with when he slid in to convert Steven Davis’ chip over Artur Boruc, before a stunning volley from 20 yards, to the delight of his boss.
“It was important that he scored, because since three or four games he can do good work, strong work for the team with good runs, strong pressing, and always available for his teammates,” said Puel.
“Today he was deserving of his goals. This is fantastic for him, because he can do strong work for the team and finally score two goals.
“It was a strong game for him, we are happy for him. This has got to give him the confidence. I hope he can continue with this good work.”
Puel introduced Steven Davis for young midfielder Harrison Reed at the interval, with the game level at 1-1 and he was also pleased with the influence the Northern Ireland international.
Puel added: "The second-half was perfect because I think we had a good balance in the midfield. Steven can bring a strong energy on the pitch and also calm with his experience.
"It was a good answer for all of the team, with a good level. Some players progress on their level in the second half, with the possibilities given by Steven Davis."
