Steven Davis hailed the quality of Jay Rodriguez after his second-half brace saw off AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The striker, who was making his 200th career league appearance, slid in to meet Davis’ delightful chip over Artur Boruc to give the Saints a crucial lead, before a simply stunning volley wrapped up all three points in the final game before Christmas.
“We haven’t scored as many goals as we’d have liked. We’ve been creating chances but we’ve not been clinical enough, and Jay has shown what he’s all about today,” Davis said.

“He’s got that quality and the second goal is a fabulous finish, the first one he’s obviously nicked from me even though I don’t know whether it was going in or not.
“I’m delighted for him because he’s had tough time with injuries and has had to be mentally strong - I’m sure he’ll take a lot of confidence from it.”
