Ryan Bertrand felt his equaliser came just at the right time as Southampton produced an inspired comeback to beat AFC Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium
Nathan Aké had given the hosts a lead after just five minutes, when he stooped low to head home Jack Wilshere’s delivery from the right.
But Bertrand’s inch-perfect strike levelled proceedings before the interval, when he surged past Simon Francis before arrowing the ball past Artur Boruc to provide the perfect platform to turn the game on its head.
“I think we’ve been a bit shy of goals of late but it’s not just the strikers role to get them all,” said Bertrand.
“We all have to chip in, especially going 1-0 down gives you that extra determination to go and get a goal.
“It was important to get the equaliser as soon as possible, we were going into the break 1-0 down so it was good to get that goal and to change the momentum.
“We’re in the running for another consistent high finish and it’ll be important to finish off a busy Christmas period on a positive note and we’ll see where that leaves us.”
