Thomas O’Connor admitted that even at one down Southampton still believed they could secure a victory against Manchester United.
The Irish midfielder also praised the spirit shown by the squad to come back from behind and progress to the next round of the FA Youth Cup with a victory at Old Trafford.
“It’s the best game I’ve ever played in,” he started.
“It was an unreal performance from the boys. Even when we went 1-0 down we still felt like there was something in it for us.
“Everyone just gave it there all and we got back to 2-1 in the end. Obviously when you go one down everyone is kind of nervous.
“But everyone dug deep and everyone believed that we were good enough to get those two goals back.”
O’Connor netted on the 82nd minute before Will Smallbone sealed the victory minutes later with a delightful strike from the edge of the area.
And the 17-year-old was surprised by the nature of his equaliser.
“I can’t even remember it, to be honest,” he continued.
“I found myself down the left channel – normally I don’t even go down the channel but I just found myself in space there.
“I cut in and it was just instinct to hit it with my right, which I don’t do very often, but luckily it went in.”
