Claude Puel says Charlie Austin is expected to miss between three and four months through injury.
Austin came off against Hapoel Be’er Sheva after injuring his shoulder, and Puel confirmed after Southampton’s win against Middlesbrough his striker would need surgery.
“I don’t exactly know how long he will stay out, but I think normally he needs surgery,” Puel told southamptonfc.com after the 1-0 victory against Boro.
“That will mean he’s out for between three and four months normally.
“It is difficult to play without Charlie, because he scores a lot of goals for us, but it’s important now to look forward with all of the players.
“I think for example, Jay can do a very good game, a strong game with intensity and quality.
“He deserved a goal at the end with all the good work he did in the game.
“We will see with Shane, and he can play better in the second half also. It’s important to take the chances without Charlie.”
