Oriol Romeu says he’ll relish the challenge of coming up against former teammate Gastón Ramírez on Sunday, should the ex-Southampton playmaker be fit to feature.
Ramírez limped off after scoring the winning goal in Boro’s win against Hull City 1-0 in the Premier League on Monday night, and could miss out this weekend.
Romeu formed a good friendship with the Uruguayan last season together at Saints, and says he’s happy to see him enjoying his football again.
“It’s good to play against an old friend. He was a good lad and I’m happy that he is doing well up there,” Romeu said.
“Seeing him enjoying his football again is very good news, but hopefully he doesn’t do too well this weekend!
“He will have a big desire to prove he is a great player, but we need to stop him and we need to be on the front foot to make sure they can’t play too easily.”
Romeu believes Saints will need to be at their best this weekend, adding: “I think they are very consistent. They are strong defensively and it will be tough for us to create chances.
“We have to be ready, we have to make sure things are done well, because they will put in a tough performance. We need to play our best football.”
