Southampton Under-23s fell to a 2-0 defeat against their Sunderland counterparts in Premier League 2 at Staplewood Campus.

Second-half goals from Joel Asoro and Josh Maja were enough for the visitors, in a game that saw both sides reduced to ten after the dismissals of Richard Bakary and George Honeyman.

Sunderland settled into their rhythm quickest in the first-half, enjoying the lion’s share of possession.

Harry Lewis was called into action after six minutes, when he beat away Elliot Embleton’s cross from the left to safety.

Shortly after, Maja profited from Bakary’s loose pass, but saw his curling effort from the edge of the box go narrowly wide of Lewis’ post.

Saints began to grow into a tightly-contested half and created their first chance when Bakary released Harley Willard down the right and Marcus Barnes met his cross, only to see his header saved by James Talbot.

At the other end, Will Wood had to be alert to intercept an incisive through ball from Tommy Beadling, with Maja waiting to collect the ball in a dangerous position.

Beadling was involved again moments later when he forced Lewis into a smart save with a drive from distance.

On 24 minutes, Will Smallbone was introduced for the injured Olufela Olomola in the first change of the contest.

And in a half of few clear-cut chances, Tyreke Johnson still looked dangerous on the left. He worked space inside the box before firing a low shot at Talbot from an acute angle.

After the break, the visitors were in front with five minutes gone when Asoro latched on to a through ball from Embleton to finish well from an angle.

Saints fell further behind seven minutes later when Maja was quickest to react from close range after Lewis had pushed away Asoro’s low centre.

Willard went closest to halving the deficit just after the hour mark, when he collected the ball before driving at Tommy Robson before rattling the post with a right-footed shot.

Late on, Bakary and George Honeyman both saw red after a melee ensued in the corner of the pitch as the Saints full-back looked to win the ball back.
