Claude Puel says Dušan Tadić is closing in on a return to action, but he has yet to make a decision on whether he will be able to play against Hapoel Be'er Sheva tomorrow night.
The Saints playmaker has not featured since early November, after sustaining a broken nose during the most recent international break, with Serbia.
However, Tadić has now returned to training, where he has been using a protective mask, and Puel will have him assessed before a decision is taken on whether he can feature in the team's decisive UEFA Europa League group match.
"Matt Targett remains injured and Alex McCarthy," said Puel. "After that, we will see for Dušan and his physical level.
"He has come back into the training sessions for a few days and we will see if he can come back into the group for Thursday's game, or perhaps for Sunday. I don't know at the moment.
"It's important he continues to work, because he had three weeks without training sessions. It's a long time and it's important he can come back with a good physical level to help the team."
