Jordy Clasie hailed the ‘amazing’ feeling of scoring his first Southampton goal to help the club into the semi-finals of the EFL Cup at Arsenal.
The Dutch international midfielder struck on 13 minutes, when Sofiane Boufal had seen his effort blocked in the box.
That lit the blue touch paper for Ryan Bertrand to double the advantage before the break to set up a two-legged tie with Liverpool.
“It feels amazing and I had to wait a long time for it. I’m happy for the team that I scored today and it was an important goal as well,” said Clasie.
“I hit it very, very well. The ball was coming with a small bounce so one thing you can do is hit it full.
“When I hit the ball I already feel it was a goal. You have to believe in it and try it.
“Stuart Taylor and the kit man said today your goal is coming so that’s why I was looking to them.
“We celebrate it today and then we focus tomorrow on Saturday.”
