Charlie Austin hailed a big three points after his solitary strike proved the difference in the 1-0 win over Everton.
Austin turned in his ninth goal of the season after just 41 seconds from close range for a lead which Saints retained in a hard-fought contest.
And after a fast start, the in-form striker was pleased with the defensive resilience on display to preserve all three points.
“It was a big game today and we needed to get the three points. I thought we controlled the game after the early goal but if we don’t get the second sometimes you get done with a sucker punch,” said Austin.
“We held on and we defended great from the goalkeeper right up to the attack and we deserved to win.”
Debutant Josh Sims helped the ball on to Austin for the decisive strike, who came in for praise from his teammate.
Austin added: “He had no fear to go out and do what he does best. He deserved what he did today.
“I don’t know whether it was going in but as a goalscorer it was there for me to put it in, but it was a great performance from Josh today!”
