Southampton Under-18s suffered a 4-1 defeat to their Chelsea counterparts on Saturday, despite leading at half time.

Michael Obafemi's first-half strike, following Will Smallbone's towering header, gave Saints the lead at the break

However, the hosts fought back in the second-half and a Callum Hudson-Odoi strike, Kristoph Klarer own goal and Charlie Brown brace ensured their victory.

Craig Fleming made five changes to his side for the visit to Cobham, which included a starting berth at right back for first-year Harrison Davis.

Chelsea started brightly and almost broke the deadlock after ten minutes through Harvey St Clair. Picking up the ball 20-yards out he spun into space and broke into the area before pounding a strike off of Adam Parkes’ crossbar.

Saints responded and soon took the lead. Will Smallbone’s towering header at the back post dropped down for Obafemi who rifled home from close range on the 15-minite mark.

The host pressed for an equaliser before the break, but Parkes was alert to the danger and parried a low drive from Tariq Uwake before then palming away a dipping free kick.

On the brink of half time, Saints almost doubled the lead. A swift counter saw Harrison Davis deliver a teasing cross from the right flank, but it was just too far ahead of Harlem Hale at the back post.

The hosts levelled proceedings swiftly after the interval. Hudson-Odoi pounced on a rebound and tucked the ball into the roof of Parkes’ net from close range.

Chelsea then made it two goals in as many minutes to take the lead, as goalscorer Hudson-Odoi’s drilled cross from the right deflected in off Klarer at the back post.

Johnson’s persistent hounding almost forced an equaliser on the hour mark. He pounced on to Jared Thompson’s loose touch in the Chelsea goal and struck from range, but his effort was blocked as it travelled goalwards.

Substitute Brown then extended Chelsea's advantage by netting two in the final ten minutes. His first came with a smart finish at the back post following a superb cross from Reece James on the right flank.

He then doubled his tally in the closing minute with a low left-footed strike into Parkes’ bottom left corner to put the result beyond doubt.
