José Fonte feels the performance in the 0-0 draw with table-topping Liverpool was not befitting of the quality in the Southampton side.
Saints held firm despite a number of second-half chances for the visitors to earn a valuable point at St Mary’s.
But despite clocking up their eighth clean sheet in all competitions, the skipper feels they should always be striving for more.
He said: “In my opinion, knowing the quality that we have, that was not good enough today and we need to do better than this.
“I’m disappointed with the performance today. We got the clean sheet but we were lucky as they missed two or three good chances.
“We need to do better, especially at home.”
Charlie Austin had Saints’ best chance of the game when he rose superbly to meet Cédric’s right-wing cross, before heading just wide.
That might have proved an important moment had it gone in to compliment a strong defensive display from Claude Puel’s men.
“Sometimes a little bit of luck helps because if we’d have got that goal it would have been a big boost for us,” Fonte said.
“We might have been able to bring the ball down a little bit and play with more confidence and composure.
“It didn’t happen and I’ve got to say the boys worked hard. We’ve got to improve though that’s for sure.”
