Yoshida helps Japan to vital win

By SFC Media Tue 15 Nov International

Maya Yoshida played the full game for Japan, as they took a major step towards the 2018 World Cup finals with a win over Saudi Arabia.

The Samurai Blue triumphed 2-1 in Saitama to move level on points with their opponents, who had started the day at the top of Group B in the Asian qualifying section.

Hiroshi Kiyotake’s penalty on the stroke of half-time put Japan in front, with Genki Haraguchi striking with just under ten minutes remaining to ensure the hosts earned an extremely valuable three points, despite Omar Hawsawi’s effort in added time ensuring a nervous conclusion.

A top-two finish in their group will ensure that Japan advance to the 2018 finals, in Russia.
