Loan Watch: Gallagher on target for Rovers

Sam Gallagher was on the scoresheet again for loan club Blackburn Rovers as he took his tally for the season to seven, against Aston Villa.

The striker went closest in a goalless first period, before powering home a superb header from Charlie Mulgrew’s left-wing cross on 54 minutes.

The lead would not last, though, as Jonathan Kodjia’s brace condemned Rovers to a 2-1 defeat at Villa Park.

Elsewhere, there was success for Dominic Gape, as he played the full 90 minutes and registered an assist in Wycombe Wanderers' 2-1 victory over Portsmouth in the FA Cup first round.

Paris Cowan-Hall opened the scoring for the Chairboys, before they were pegged back by their hosts when Gareth Evans converted from Enda Stevens's low cross.

But, with the game heading towards a replay, Adebayo Akinfenwa headed home from Gape’s cross on 84 minutes to send them through.

Jason McCarthy also played the duration of Walsall’s FA Cup first-round tie, as they fell to a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Macclesfield.

John McCombe’s header on 23 minutes settled the contest at Banks’s Stadium, when he met Danny Whitaker’s inviting cross.

Paulo Gazzaniga was also involved for his loan club Rayo Vallecano, playing the full 90 minutes as they lost 1-0 to UCAM Murcia in Segunda División.
