Southampton Under-23s secured a 1-0 victory over their Swansea City counterparts in the Premier League Cup on Friday night.

An early strike from Tyreke Johnson secured three points for Saints in their second Group A fixture, as they made amends for their defeat to Bristol City in their opening group game.

Technical Director Martin Hunter made six changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Derby County last time out, with Lloyd Isgrove and Olufela Olomola, who made his first team debut in the EFL Cup last week, both starting the game.

The first chance of the game fell for the hosts when Aaron Lewis’ dangerous cross was cleared as far as Dan James, who saw his early effort crash against the post.

But on six minutes, it was Saints that made the breakthrough when Isgrove breezed past two defenders before picking out Johnson at the back post, who stooped to head beyond Lewis Thomas.

It was a half of few clear-cut chances, but Johnson was involved again when he picked up a loose pass before Thomas O’Connor found Olomola, who turned well before seeing his low drive saved by Thomas.

Towards the end of the half, Callum Slattery worked back to intercept possession in typically industrious fashion, but despite a neat one-two with Johnson, his shot was comfortable for Thomas.

The hosts probed for an equaliser, but Saints showed their resilience to see out the first half with their lead intact.

After the break, it followed a similar pattern. Alex Samuel forced a smart reaction save from Adam Parkes with his angled drive, before Joe Rodon’s header deflected off Ollie Cook to force Parkes into another good stop.

Soon after, Rodon also saw a free header drift wide from substitute George Byers’ corner.

On 65, Jake Vokins’ powerful run down the left side was followed up by an inch-perfect cross for Olomola, who saw his header saved by Thomas from point-blank range.

Saints stood up to everything Swansea threw at them late on, with Jake Flannigan also making his return from a long injury lay-off in the second half, to see the game out and move on to three points from two group games.
