Southampton Under-18s fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Fulham in the Under-18 Premier League.

First-half strikes from Cameron Thompson and Chris Kelly were compounded by Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson’s calmly taken penalty to give the Lillywhites a 3-0 advantage at the break.

And despite a much-improved second-half display, Saints were unable to work a way back into the league fixture at Staplewood Campus.

It was the visitors came closest in the opening stages of the match, as Adam Parkes was forced to palm Thorsteinsson’s early whipped free-kick onto the crossbar and behind.

Fulham made their breakthrough on the 23rd minute. Having worked the ball to the left byline, it was then cut back for the onrushing Thompson who fired low into Parkes’ bottom left corner.

Ten minutes later the Lillywhites doubled their advantage. Having seen the ball bounce around the Saints penalty area, Kelly eventually took control, moving it onto his right foot and rifling in at the near post.

There was to be another before Saints could get in for half-time. Thompson jinked inside his man and was felled in the area by Connor Langan on the right of the penalty area, leaving referee Christopher Wicks to point to the spot.

Thornsteinsson then stepped up to take for the visitors, and dispatched his penalty confidently past Parkes into the bottom left corner to make it three before the break.

Saints started the second-half more brightly and could have pulled one back early on had Fulham ‘keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond not been equal to Will Smallbone’s rasping volley from 20-yards.

The visitors almost added another to their tally shortly after. After a mazy run Thorsteinsson came close again, only to see his curled effort rebound off the outside of Parkes’ far post.

Saints continue to press into the closing stages of the encounter, but the visitors held on to secure a 3-0 victory.
