Southampton’s Under-18s were pegged back to a 2-2 draw against Leicester City late on at Staplewood.

Saints led 2-0 at half time with Will Smallbone and Michael Obafemi on target inside the opening 20 minutes as the hosts made a flying start to the contest.

It was a young U18s team as over half of the starting eleven were first year scholars who sought a return to getting on the scoresheet after drawing a blank in each of their last two games.

But while they had been resolute at the other end recently, Saints were denied a first win in four games when Leicester substitutes Tom Fielding and Harrison Myring each found a way through to snatch a point.

The hosts started the game four points ahead of their opponents, and after getting the match under way, they were ahead inside a minute of play.

A strong break forward from Siph Mdlalose down the right saw him square the ball to Will Smallbone who stabbed the ball high into the net from inside the six yard box to give Craig Fleming’s men a perfect start.

The positive opening from Saints showed no signs of slowing, with Christoph Klarer heading over from Smallbone’s corner, before the home side doubled their lead on 18 minutes.

Another fine flowing move started in midfield and ended with Connor Langan’s low cross smashed high into the net by striker Michael Obafemi on his first start of the season.

As Saints sought to extend their lead, Mdlalose took aim from distance, but saw his curling effort go high and wide of the right post.

Leicester threatened to get back into it with Kairo Edwards-John seeing his shot deflected out for a corner. The resulting set-piece saw Kyle Gruno put a header wide.

The Foxes’ number nine Elliott Webber also fired over as the visitors offered a few reminders of their danger on the break, but Saints held their two-goal lead going in at half time.

Leicester brought on Harrison Myring for the second 45 minutes and had the first chance of the half when Cal Templeton warmed the hands of Adam Parkes.

The Saints ‘keeper was called into action again to deny Kairo Edwards-John as the visitors were thwarted a chance of getting back into the game.

At the other end, Mdlalose set up Archie Thomas for a shot which went wide, while Obafemi had a great chance to add to his tally for the afternoon, but placed his effort beyond the far post.

Substitute Tom Fielding set up a grandstand finish when he curled in a fine goal from Christoph Klarer’s clearance on the edge of the box with just over ten minutes remaining.

And Saints were pegged back when fellow Leicester substitute Harrison Myring reacted quickly inside the area to clip a deflected shot beyond Parkes to rescue a point for the visitors.
