Internazionale boss Frank de Boer has urged his side to turn their fortunes around against Southampton in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

Nerazzurri fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari in Serie A last time out, after a defeat by the same scoreline at Roma’s Stadio Olimpico.

But, speaking in his pre-match press conference, de Boer says he has confidence in his players as they look for an improvement.

He said: “It’s always tough when you don’t win – the results against Roma and Cagliari show that.

“We need to improve. We weren’t expecting the last defeat and even though we’ve shown good things we still need to get better.

“We know we need to turn it around because time is something you never have a lot of in football.

“The results aren’t good at the moment, but we starting from nothing and you need time to get to know a team.

“I have great confidence in my players. We’re improving and it’s only a matter of time before the results start coming.”

Defender Davide Santon, who has experience of English football with Newcastle United, has also stressed the importance of the side’s attitude towards the game.

Santon said: “We need to go for the three points tomorrow. Our first two games in the Europa League didn’t go as planned so it’s vital we get the win.

“The most important thing is the team’s attitude going into the game. We have great players but on a few occasions we haven’t got the approach right.

“Tomorrow we have to concentrate from the first whistle to the last.”
