Southampton Under-18s were held to a goalless draw against their Brighton and Hove Albion counterparts in the Under-18 Premier League.

Craig Fleming’s side took a valuable point from the AMEX Elite Performance Centre, after a tightly-contested game.

The first action of the game came on 16 minutes, when Adam Parkes did well to parry an inswinging free-kick from Danny Mandroiu.

Mandriou looked lively in the opening exchanges and was involved again when his low shot was comfortably collected by Parkes.

Both sides soon settled into their rhythm and Saints began to grow into the contest. First Jonathan Afolabi was almost presented with an opportunity after a slip by Danny Barker, before Will Smallbone’s deep free-kick towards the back post evaded everyone.

Callum Slattery came closest to opening the scoring though, after neat interplay in midfield allowed him the opportunity to shoot – only to see his right-footed effort from distance go wide.

Brighton were then denied by some superb defending, when Isaac Hutchinson found space before being shut down by a combination of Christoph Klarer and Aaron O’Driscoll to see his shot blocked valiantly.

The second-half began in similarly scrappy fashion. Smallbone saw his free-kick headed out, before the hosts broke through Mandroiu, only for an excellent recovery run and challenge from Harlem Hale to deny Max Sanders.

Chances were few and far between, and Michael Obafemi was introduced to the action on the hour mark to try and break the deadlock.

His endeavour helped win a free-kick moments later but when Slattery’s delivery was clipped in, Afolabi was adjudged to be in an offside position.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, good work from Hale earned Saints a corner, but Smallbone’s cross was headed wide by Christoph Klarer.

Slattery then looked to replicate his goal of the month contender against Aston Villa when he tried an audacious effort from distance, this time seeing his shot rise high and wide over Tom McGill’s goal.

Neither side could prise an opening in the last ten minutes and Fleming’s side preserved their clean sheet to continue a strong start to the campaign.
