Højbjerg plays an hour of Danish defeat

By SFC Media Tue 11 Oct International

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg played 63 minutes for Denmark as they lost ground in their World Cup qualifying group with a 1-0 defeat to Montenegro.

The Southampton midfielder started the contest in Copenhagen and was on the pitch for just over an hour of play as the hosts failed to recover from going a goal behind in the first half.

Fatos Bećiraj scored the only goal of the contest for the visitors just past the half hour, when the Dinamo Moscow forward lofted the ball over Kasper Schmeichel following a lofted assist from Internazionale striker Stevan Jovetić.

Although the goal came against the run of play, Montenegro kept the Danes out in the second 45 with Højbjerg replaced by Celta Vigo’s Pione Sisto for the final half an hour of action.

It was a consecutive defeat for Denmark following last Saturday’s 3-2 loss in Poland and they will hope for an improvement in next month’s international schedule when they host Kazakhstan, looking to build on the three points they have from as many games played.
