Van Dijk involved as Netherlands lose to France

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk played the full game as Netherlands went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat against France in Amsterdam.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba put France ahead on 30 minutes with a long range strike which slipped through the hands of Maarten Stekelenburg.

The Dutch have not beaten France in the Netherlands since a 1-0 victory in a World Cup qualifying match in March 1981.

The French now move onto seven points from their opening three games of Group A, which leaves the Netherlands potentially in need of a result in France next August.

Van Dijk’s club teammate Jordy Clasie was an unused substitute on the night.

The Netherlands are next in action in November when the Dutch travel to Luxembourg for another World Cup qualifier.
