Davis nets in win against San Marino

By SFC Media Sat 08 Oct Steven Davis

Southampton's Steven Davis netted from the penalty spot as Northern Ireland beat San Marino at Windsor Park.

Captaining Michael O'Neill's side in their first home game since enjoying a successful UEFA EURO 2016 campaign, Davis scored from the penalty spot with 26 minutes gone to calm any early nerves.

The game became easier for the hosts when minnows San Marino were reduced to ten men just after the start of the second half, as Mirko Palazzi was sent off.

Despite the man advantage, Davis and his teammates had to be patient, but the second goal arrived with 15 minutes remaining, as Kyle Lafferty found the net.

Jamie Ward added a third with four minutes left to play, before Davis grabbed an assist as Lafferty netted his second of the night to make it 4-0.

The result leaves Northern Ireland on four points from two Group C qualifiers.
