José Fonte is looking to keep the momentum going ahead of another big week for Southampton.
Saints travel to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the UEFA Europa League, before a trip to Leicester City on Sunday as they look to extend an impressive run of four consecutive victories.
And the captain remains focused on continuing to improve despite the confidence gained from their current form.
He said: “We still have a lot to improve. We can improve to not put ourselves in difficult situations.
“We need to kill the game earlier, manage the game better and make sure we don’t give opportunities to the opponents, so there’s still things to improve massively.
“But nevertheless the win against West Ham was important for the confidence.
“Keep the momentum going, that’s what we said today. We’re going to try and keep this going for as long as we can.”
After his UEFA EURO 2016 winning exploits with Portugal, there was little time for rest and relaxation ahead of an intense campaign.
Fonte, though, insists he is settling into the season fine alongside Virgil van Dijk after four clean sheets on the bounce.
He added: “I had no rest. I had two, maybe three weeks away so it was difficult to come back to the team, but now I’m feeling better and better. I just want to have a great season again.”
