Claude Puel heaped praise on Charlie Austin after the striker netted his fifth goal in four games during Southampton’s 3-0 win against West Ham United.

Austin’s 39th-minute strike put Saints on their way to an impressive victory at London Stadium, with second-half goals from Dušan Tadić and James Ward-Prowse completing the win.

It was Austin’s fifth goal in four games, having netted twice against Sparta Praha and in the wins overs Swansea City and Crystal Palace, and Puel was delighted for his number ten.

“It’s important for Charlie and for the team also,” Puel said.

“I think he scored with his first chance in the game, which is the mark of a good striker with confidence.

“It’s important for us. The best answer is to score every game an to find solutions to get the selection.

“For me it’s important for him and the team that he can score different goals. This is for a striker in confidence very interesting.

“But I also think it’s important for the future that many other players can score and not just Charlie."
