Southampton made it back-to-back Premier League victories with a 3-0 win at London Stadium thanks to goals from Charlie Austin, Dušan Tadić and James Ward-Prowse.

Austin set Saints on their way with his fifth goal in four games, while Tadić doubled the lead just past the hour mark, before substitute Ward-Prowse made the win safe late on.

The victory owed to a well-drilled performance from the visitors who inflicted more misery on the hosts who remain in the bottom three of the table, while Claude Puel’s men move into the top half with eight points.

There were two changes from the team that started against Swansea in the previous Premier League match with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Charlie Austin coming into the side.

Young midfielder Jake Hesketh was also rewarded for his goal in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, with a place on the bench.

Austin led the line alongside Nathan Redmond and Tadić, and the in form striker was involved straightaway as he took a couple of early fouls from the hosts in a cagey opening to the contest.

But Austin got the ball rolling for Saints at the end of the first half with a goal typical of the visitors’ style

Another goal for Charlie Austin

It came five minutes before half time as a patient move was rewarded when Bertrand broke free down the left to cross for Austin who drifted away from his marker to swipe the ball into the far corner of the net.

Puel’s men had another chance at the end of the opening 45 when Cédric struck the side netting after getting on the end of Højbjerg pass inside the area.

It was a pleasing half of football for the visitors who had worked hard to keep the hosts at bay, while their goal was just reward for prising open the opportunity just before the break.

Saints made a strong start to the second 45 and were rewarded just past the hour mark with a second goal, which came from Tadić.

Another good interchange just outside of West Ham’s area saw Davis, Redmond and Austin combine, with the latter dinking a nice touch into the path of the Serbian who kept his composure to round Adrian and find the empty net.

A first goal of the season for Dušan Tadić

Steven Davis was denied a third when Adrian stood form to make a fine block from the Northern Irishman.

At the other end, Payet fired wide with a shot you would normally expect him to find the target with, but Saints showed they weren’t happy to just sit on their lead.

Redmond had a low shot blocked by Adrian, before substitute Ward-Prowse went close when he saw a rising shot pushed away by the West Ham ‘keeper who went on to make another good stop to deny Højbjerg.

But in the four minutes of stoppage time, Ward-Prowse sealed the win when he finished off Davis’s cutback to seal a 3-0 victory, the fourth consecutive win in all competitions for Southampton – without conceding in that time too.
