Southampton Under-18s were held to a 1-1 draw against fellow in-form side Reading in the Under-18 Premier League at Hogwood Park.

Craig Fleming's team made the short journey up the M3 and came home with a point, as Tyreke Johnson's second-half header was cancelled out by Joel Rollinson late on.

Saints have now taken 10 points from their opening five matches, as they continued their strong start to the campaign.

Southampton started the game relatively brightly, with Johnson testing Joe Tupper in the Reading goal with a shot from 20 yards after eight minutes, before sending a free-kick over from a similar distance shortly after.

But the hosts then began to come into it, with Ben House heading wide from a Teddy Howe cross in the 16th minute, then shooting over from another delivery shortly after.

House went even closer in the 18th minute, as he slid in at the back post to meet Ramarni Medford-Smith’s cross from the left, but he could only divert the ball onto the upright from close range.

Midway through the half, Will Smallbone had a header from a corner scrambled away from the six-yard box by the Reading defence, before Johnson fired an angled shot wide after finding some space in the area.

It proved to be the last significant action of the half, as the tight battle continued through to the interval.

Siph Mdlalose then tested Royals keeper Tupper with a snapshot shortly after the restart, as the visitors started positively.

They were rewarded for that as soon as the 48th minute, as Harlem Hale showed excellent strength and skill down the right, before delivering a perfect cross for Johnson, who headed home from six yards out to give Saints the lead.

Reading came within inches of levelling in the 66th minute, as Joel Rollinson raced forward and fired in a shot from 18 yards that crashed against the bar and went over.

With 15 minutes left, Harry Hamblin then forced a decent save from Tupper, with a low drive from 20 yards, but it was the hosts who made the next breakthrough.

Saints couldn't scramble a corner clear, and Rollinson was on hand to drive a shot through a crowd of bodies and into the back of the net to make it 1-1 in the 78th minute.

The visitors then came under pressure and Adam Parkes had to make an excellent stop from House, after he was found all alone in the area.

Both sides pushed for a winner late on, with Hale and Johnson both firing over from just outside the area, but each team had to settle for a point in the end.
