Jack Stephens scored the only goal of the game as Southampton's Under-23s saw off their counterparts from Tottenham in Premier League 2 on Friday night.

Stephens headed home a 38th-minute effort for the only goal of the contest, which secured a fourth win from six for Saints as they continue to keep pace with the league leaders.

Both teams also ended this game with ten men following a second-half fracas with George Marsh and Harley Willard dismissed, but Saints stood firm to make it a third game unbeaten and maintain their record of not tasting defeat at home so far this season with the success at St Mary's.

There were three changes from the team that started the 2-2 draw with Leicester, with Jack Stephens, Ollie Cook and Harley Willard all coming into the side, which saw Alfie Jones move into defensive midfield alongside Thomas O'Connor.

Two-goal hero from that game Olufela Olomola led the line for the hosts who were given a stern test by the north Londoners in the opening part of the game, with Saints keeper Harry Lewis called into action on a few occasions.

Lewis notably kept out Shilow Tracey with a low stop using his feet, and then again more impressively to deny Reo Griffiths, as the keeper punched a rising shot to safety.

Saints grew into the contest and threatened when Callum Slattery showed good vision to set Olomola away on goal in the 18th minute. The striker chased the ball down and robbed Spurs stopper Tom Glover of the ball, but saw his ambitious strike from distance drop just wide of the left post.

But after Ollie Cook headed wide from Slattery's corner, the hosts found a way through on 38 minutes.

Josh Sims was blocked off as he ran towards goal by George Marsh just moments after the Spurs man had gone into the book for dissent. From the resulting free-kick, Slattery's delivery into the area was headed home by Jack Stephens off the underside of the crossbar.

Saints almost doubled their lead before the break when Olomola set Harley Willard away down the left, and the winger saw his low shot gathered by Glover to keep the score at 1-0.

A similarly competitive opening to the second 45 saw both sides give little away until Saints stepped up the pressure.

Some strong pressing saw Sims pounce on a weak clearance from Glover, who then recovered to keep out the winger's shot with a parried save at the near post.

Spurs worked Lewis again on 69 minutes when full-back Kyle Walker-Peters ventured forward to hit a low strike which took a deflection on its way through to the Saints keeper.

Substitute Keanan Bennetts fired a free-kick wide of the right post after O'Connor's foul on Walker-Peters, and, moments later a fracas broke out which resulted in both teams ending the game with ten men as Marsh and Willard received second yellow cards for their involvement.

Lewis was called into action again late on to keep out Griffiths again as his low shot was jumped on by the Saints man who kept a deserved clean sheet on the night.
