Jake Hesketh is hoping his performance in the EFL Cup against Crystal Palace can give him the confidence to improve further this season.
Hesketh scored his first senior goal to set up a tie with Sunderland at St Mary’s in the Fourth Round of the competition.
And having had his first-team debut cut short against Burnley in the 2014/15 campaign through injury, it served to make the victory over the Eagles an even sweeter success.
“I was happy with how I played, I created a few chances and got in and around it, but there are areas I’d like to improve on and the goal topped it off,” said Hesketh.
“It’s massive for me. I think it was made a little bit more special after what happened at Burnley.
“I have belief in myself that I can play at Under-23 as I’ve done that a couple of years now.
He added: “As you grow up through the Academy it’s always that next step up. Before you’ve done it, you wonder whether you can.
“This has given me great confidence and I need to take that forward for the rest of the season.
“It’s one game but I’ve got to use it and produce on a regular basis to impress the manager so he has the faith to play me.”
