Oriol Romeu says the Southampton players can rise to the challenge as they seek a third win inside a week when Crystal Palace visit St Mary’s in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Romeu has played in each of the past two games which have seen Saints pick up back-to-back wins in UEFA Europa League and Premier League competition.
During that time, manager Claude Puel has rotated his team and plans more of the same this week, which Romeu says keeps everyone on their toes.
“We have proved this the last few games and we just want to keep showing it,” he said. “Whoever’s playing knows his job, knows what we have to do on the pitch.
“I think it is good,” he continued. “We need to keep winning and just doing the same. Rotation is important to keep everyone fresh for the next challenge.
“The season is very long with a lot of games and competition. The whole squad is important, we are proving that so far and we just want to keep doing the same.”
Crystal Palace arrive on the south coast having dumped Saints out of the FA Cup in each of the past two seasons, but Romeu says the home side’s current run of form has generated plenty of confidence.
“We need to keep our positive run going and the League Cup is important as any game,” he said. “We want to go through. We want to win and want to do our best.
“Any competition is a chance to win and be in a great place, but it’s going to be hard.
“Crystal Palace also have a great squad, but we are happy and want to keep winning.”
Romeu is not worried about Palace’s recent record against Saints and is focusing on getting through to the next round of the competition.
“Football is like that sometimes, but hopefully we beat them,” he said. “It’s something we’re not thinking of. It’s different, it’s a new cup we want to go through, but we’re not talking about the past.”
