Southampton Under-23s were denied consecutive victories in Premier League 2, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Leicester City at Staplewood on Monday evening.

Olufela Olomola’s brace either side of Admiral Muskwe’s leveler on the stroke of half time looked to have made it four wins in five games, before Raul Uche headed in with two minutes remaining.

Technical Director Martin Hunter made four changes to the side that recorded a 3-1 victory over Reading last time out with goalkeeper Harry Lewis replacing Alex McCarthy for his third start of the season.

Callum Slattery, who scored a stunning goal against Aston Villa for the U18s on Friday, replaced Harrison Reed in midfield, with Tyreke Johnson and Will Wood replacing Jake Hesketh and Jack Stephens.

After three league wins out of four so far this season, assistant coach Radhi Jaïdi called for the side to maintain their standards of performance.

It was Leicester who started brightly when Lewis was tested twice early on by a stinging shot from Harvey Barnes and then turning away an effort from Muskwe.

But Saints soon established themselves in the game when Olomola showed great strength to turn his man before seeing his left-footed drive parried away by Max Bramley for their first chance of the game.

Just moments later though, the deadlock was broken when Johnson delivered a stunning cross from the left and Olomola found space in the box to power a header home to and give Southampton an early lead.

As the visitors searched for a way back into the game, Richard Bakary blocked a shot from Matt Miles after the ball was cleverly cut back, before Muskwe turned an instinctive effort at the near post from Liandro Martis’ cross wide under pressure from Wood.

Saints delivered the perfect response to those spurned opportunities as Alfie Jones came close to his second goal in a week.

Josh Sims cut inside from the right and delivered a cross with his left foot, which was stabbed inches wide by the centre-back.

But having averted the danger from the visitors manfully for the most part, Muskwe netted his second goal of the PL2 campaign when he levelled with a header from Miles’ right-wing cross.

The hosts were straight back on the front foot after the break though in what was a frantic start, as Sam McQueen’s low cross was flicked goalwards by Olomola at the front post to force a fine save from Bramley.

Leicester looked to press Saints high up the pitch in the second-half and that almost paid dividends when Martis squeezed a ball through to Muskwe, who was flagged for offside after tucking the ball away.

The dangerous Sims looked lively as he went seeking his fifth goal of the season but almost turned provider when his burst from midfield saw him tee up Olomola who saw his effort pushed out.

Barnes responded with a speculative shot from the edge of the area for Steve Beaglehole’s men, which came through a crowd of bodies and had to be pushed out by Lewis low to his left.

With just under 15 minutes remaining, his deep corner then found Moore at the back post and he climbed highest before seeing his header cleared off the line by Bakary.

Late on, Saints began to turn the screw and when Lloyd Isgrove picked up the ball from a throw-in, he found the perfect cross for Olomola to net his second of the night.

That looked to have won it but for substitute Raul Uche to head home from a corner to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.
