Southampton’s Under-18s fell to their second defeat of the season with a 3-0 loss to league leaders Arsenal in London Colney on Saturday.

Saints slipped behind on 21 minutes through Eddie Nketiah’s strike for a lead Arsenal held onto at the break.

Nine minutes after the restart, the Gunners doubled their lead when Vlad Dragomir scored a superb long range strike, before substitute Reiss Nelson confirmed Arsenal’s win with a goal just minutes after coming on.

It was the second loss of the campaign for Craig Fleming’s side who went into the game on back-to-back wins, but the unbeaten Gunners maintained their good start to the season by taking all three points.

There was a debut for Christoph Klarer in the visitors’ defence alongside captain Aaron O’Driscoll, while joint-top scorers Tyreke Johnson and Siph Mdlalose lined up in attack.

Klarer had the first chance of the game too inside six minutes, as he headed narrowly over the bar from Johnson’s corner.

Southampton goalkeeper Adam Parkes was called into action on the quarter hour mark when he kept out Emile Smith-Rowe shot from the edge of the box.

Arsenal scored with their next attack though, as Eddie Nketiah took the ball into the area and curled a finish into the left side of the net.

Saints had a chance to level before half time when another Johnson corner this time found the head of O’Driscoll, whose effort was cleared off the line by a combination of goalkeeper and defender.

The visitors fell further behind on 54 minutes with a bolt from the blue when Vlad Dragomir crashed home a stunning 30-yard effort.

Reiss Nelson added a third just minutes after entering the action when he raced into the area and took a pass in his stride before firing low under Adam Parkes to seal the win.
