Forster: England return has capped off injury comeback

Fraser Forster says his return to action with England over the last week has capped off his comeback from injury.

After ten months on the sidelines recovering from a serious knee problem suffered in March last year, Forster was reintroduced to the Saints side in January.

Since then, he has been in excellent form and was brought back into the England fold at the first opportunity, for the friendly matches away to Germany and at home to Netherlands.

Forster featured in both, coming on as a substitute in the 3-2 win in Berlin, while playing the full game in last night’s 2-1 loss to the Dutch.

“It’s been quite a big week for me,” Forster told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. “I look at where I was a year ago [and] it’s obviously great to be back involved and to play is the icing on the cake.

“That’s kind of capped off the year for me, but it’s just another incentive to keep working hard and try and play as well as I can for Southampton heading into the summer and then go from there.”

On Tuesday’s defeat, Forster added: “It’s disappointing to lose in the end, and they were two tough goals to take.

“I thought we played well, dominated possession and limited them to very few opportunities. We scored a great goal ourselves, but it was disappointing with the two goals.

“I just didn’t know how we’d lost the game. It was good to see Jordy [Clasie] and Virgil [van Dijk], but it would’ve been nice to win the game. It’s disappointing.”
