Yoshida's Japan see off Syria

Maya Yoshida played the full 90 minutes for Japan who recorded their second 5-0 victory in as many games with a convincing win over Syria on Tuesday.

Although their place in the Asia third round of qualification for the 2018 World Cup had already been secured, Samurai Blue preserved their unbeaten record with a victory made to look more comfortable thanks to three goals in the last five minutes of this game.

Japan led 1-0 at half-time through an own goal before Shinji Kagawa doubled the advantage just after the hour mark at Saitama Stadium.

Keisuke Honda made it 3-0 in the 86th minute, before Kagawa struck again, with Hertha Berlin’s Genki Karaguchi contributing the game’s fifth goal in stoppage time.

Yoshida, who scored in Japan’s 5-0 win over Afghanistan last week, was not on target this time around, but completed the full game at left back, with Leicester City striker Shinji Okazaki also playing the 90 minutes ahead of Saints’ trip to the King Power Stadium this weekend.

The third round of qualification commences in August, with 12 teams to be drawn into two round robin, home-and-away groups of six teams each.
