Ward-Prowse and Targett help England U21s to draw

James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett played the full 90 minutes for England Under-21s as they drew 1-1 with Switzerland in Thun.

Ward-Prowse captained Gareth Southgate’s side in the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group 9 qualifier, as they maintained their unbeaten start.

After a goalless first half, Hull City striker Chuba Akpom opened the scoring just after the break as he converted Demarai Gray’s low cross.

Ward-Prowse went close to another international goal, but saw his free-kick cannon off the woodwork and bounce away to safety.

But the hosts levelled with just under 15 minutes remaining as Florian Kamberi found the net, before Jordan Ibe was sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

The draw leaves Southgate’s side on 11 points from their opening five qualifying fixtures, having won three and drawn two so far.

Defender Jack Stephens, currently on loan at League 1 side Coventry City, was an unused substitute.
