Isgrove's Wales call delights Hunter

Technical Director Martin Hunter was delighted to hear of Lloyd Isgrove’s call-up to the Wales national side.

Isgrove, who has previously played for Wales Under-21s, has been out on loan at League 1 side Barnsley for much of the 2015/16 campaign.

Despite sitting in the relegation zone not long after Isgrove arrived, the Saints winger has played his part in helping the Tykes go on a remarkable run that has lifted them into the play-off places.

And his form has been rewarded, with Wales boss Chris Coleman opting to name Isgrove in his squad for matches against Northern Ireland (Thursday) and Ukraine (Monday).

“It’s really good for him,” Hunter told “He needs to be tested and he’s done well and played a lot of minutes at Barnsley.

“He’s had a big influence on the team with his pace and the way he can attack in the final third of the pitch.

“For him to get a call-up to the national team is simply a credit to him and the hard work he has put in.”

Isgrove will already be heading to the second Wembley final of his career in early April as Barnsley look to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and Hunter believes he’s in with a chance of making two trips in one season.

“Lloyd has had several injuries, which means his career has probably flowed the way we would’ve liked and he’s doing well now,” Hunter said.

“Barnsley are in the play-off places. Hopefully he will get the experience of that and going to Wembley more than once.”
