Wanyama always believed in Saints

Victor Wanyama was pleased to play his part in helping Saints recover the game in their 3-2 comeback win over Liverpool at St Mary’s.

Wanyama, who had been absent for the past five matches through suspension, had to wait until the second half to get his chance to play again, and he grasped the opportunity to help the team overturn a 2-0 deficit.

The midfielder entered the action alongside Sadio Mané for the second 45 minutes, and he felt confident that the duo could make an impact on the game.

“I was thinking we still had a chance,” he told youtube.com/southamptonfc

“I know the team never gives up and I went in there knowing we could do something and still believing we could get something from the game.

“It was a tough game. Liverpool is a really good team and the result was fantastic. Today I think the whole team played really well.”

Mané missed a penalty shortly into the second half, but the Senegalese repaid that loss with his two strikes which keeps Saints in the hunt for a European qualification spot.

“We missed a penalty and it’s difficult, and sometimes you miss a penalty and think we won’t get back but we never doubted ourselves and we knew we could push again to try and take something from the game and we did well from there to hang on for the win.

“We really needed to win and today we showed great character and we have done well today and managed to get three points.

“It is important that we keep on getting the points on the board because the standings are a bit tight, but you never know because if you get points like this then who knows where you could end up. I’m happy today for the team and for everyone.”
