Romeu proud of win over Liverpool

Oriol Romeu felt that Saints were rewarded for not giving up in their 3-2 win over Liverpool.

Romeu was on the pitch when Sadio Mané cut the deficit in half to make it 2-1, but the Spaniard was withdrawn before Saints’ late show when Mané and Graziano Pellè each scored to win the game.

“The team kept doing the same, which tells you a lot and shows you the character of the team. We are very proud,” he told reporters after the game.

“We changed tactically and I think that gave us more opportunities to get the goals. In the first half, they were getting most of the second balls, which allowed them to make those chances but in the second half, they were more closer to their goal, we were closer to scoring and after the second, it was about the belief.

“Against anybody when the 11 players are doing their jobs properly and believing in the win, we have a big chance to get those three points.”

The midfielder was extra pleased for the team which he felt showed good character to score three times in the second half especially after Mané missed a penalty.

“We had four or five minutes with a bit of shock because it was a good chance to get closer and we didn’t get it in,” he recalled of the missed spot kick.

“Players are clever enough to know that one time you might miss, the next time you might score and that is what happened today. He missed the penalty but scored twice in the second half.

“He came in the second half along with Victor and they had a very big impact on the team. That helped us to do the comeback.”

The contrast in performance between the two halves was clear, but Romeu isn’t getting carried away by the turnaround as Saints earned back-to-back victories over rivals for a European qualification spot.

“I think after the first half and a few goals given away too easily, there was still a kind of feeling and it was very good from the team.

“If I was more happy, it would be because I was not expecting it at all. We always have belief.

“When you are in the team and you are on the pitch, you are always trying to comeback. Sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t but today was one of those days that we did it.”
