Hunter wants more of the same from under-21s

Martin Hunter wants Southampton Under-21s to build on their excellent performance at Middlesbrough when they visit Liverpool tomorrow.

Saints ended a run of eight Barclays Under-21 Premier League matches without a win in style, as they saw off Boro 3-1 at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park Stadium.

The impressive display was capped by goals from Josh Sims and Sam Gallagher, who bagged a brace, and Hunter is keen for his charges to recapture the form they showed when they take on the Reds at Chester’s Deva Stadium (2pm GMT).

"It was a terrific afternoon all round,” Hunter told Southampton’s official YouTube channel of last Monday’s come-from-behind win.

“Obviously, they scored against the run of play and, as we've talked about, we played particularly well and scored three good goals, so the overall team performance was very pleasing.

"The standard of their overall play was good, the defending was good and the attacking play was far better than we've had in previous weeks.

“We've got another tough game coming up, but hopefully we'll continue to progress from the performance at Middlesbrough.”

Saints lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Staplewood when the teams met in January, although Hunter’s side were the more dominant force throughout, and the Technical Director is expecting another good battle between the sides this weekend.

“We're looking to go there and perform well and win the game,” said Hunter. “Going back to the home fixture here, we played particularly well that night, created lots of chances and didn't take them, so we've got to make sure on Sunday when we do create our chances we score.

"They're quite an old team now, they've got no players out on loan, any of their better players are in that team. I also notice they've played some senior players as well, so it's going to be a difficult game, it will be a challenge, but one that everybody's looking forward to.”
