Ronald Koeman says he hopes his players will be gunning for revenge against Liverpool this Sunday.
Saints were beaten 6-1 by the Reds in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup in December on a chastening night at St Mary’s.
Far from trying to forget about that game, Koeman is happy for his players to use the result as motivation this weekend and believes they can apply some lessons from it this time around.
"I hope that the players get a little bit of a revenge feeling and revenge spirit,” Koeman told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. “Ok, it was a difficult evening.
“Liverpool played well, had great attacking movements and that makes it very difficult. I remember in the second half we took more risks and they punished us for the space they got that evening, but that's a good message for this game that we need to play very compact and then we can get a good result.”
On what he is expecting from Jürgen Klopp’s team, the Southampton manager said: "It's a strong side. They showed a good level in both games against Man United in the Europa League.
“Of course, they have players coming back from injuries, they have a lot of options to put in the starting line-up and we will wait for which team will start, but we are prepared for a tough game.”
