After victory at Stoke City on Saturday, Cuco Martina has called for more of the same from Southampton when Liverpool visit this weekend.
The defender has been recalled to the side for the last two fixtures, against Sunderland and Stoke City, and believes the performance at the Britannia Stadium has put Saints in good shape for the visit of Liverpool.
Ronald Koeman’s side have faced the Reds twice already this season, suffering a 6-1 defeat in the Capital One Cup, but Martina says those previous matches won’t count for anything this time around.
“It was a great win against Stoke City. The first half was very good, but the second half was a little bit more difficult,” the summer signing told youtube.com/southamptonfc.
“But it was a great win and now we are on 44 points, which is good. The two games were important and now if we win against Liverpool, then we will be looking up, not down.
“I have heard the players talking about the game and Sammy [Lee] has also said it’s a big game against Liverpool.
“[The 6-1 defeat] is out of the picture. That’s in the past. We need to only look forwards. We have to stick to our gameplan and then for sure we will be okay.
“We know if we win the game, we can move closer to the Europa League – they can also. We need to be sharp and stick to our plan.”
With an international break around the corner, Martina is well aware of the importance of making sure Saints head into it on the back of a positive result.
“It’s great if you can win against Liverpool, because it gives us good momentum,” Martina added.
“When we had the last break we came back and it was not so good, so we need to be sharper. When we go away to the national teams, we need to stay focused.”
