Matt Targett says he’s benefitting from a sustained run of games as he looks to help Southampton back into Europe.
The defender, who grew up supporting Saints before going on to make his first-team debut last season, has featured regularly since the turn of the year.
Targett played an important part in helping Saints to three points at Stoke City on Saturday, and says he’s enjoying the opportunity to feature regularly.
“I think just having a good run of games has helped me,” Targett told reporters after Saturday’s win at the Britannia Stadium.
“I’ve grown into the position, got more confident game by game and now I feel comfortable playing at this level.
“I think when we play 3-5-2, it gives me the licence to get forward much more. I’ve got to provide the width on the left-hand side and be an attacking threat.
“It hasn’t been too different, because normally I play left-back. It’s just a bit more defending when you’re at left-back, like it was at Stoke.”
On the back of the win against the Potters, Targett says Saints will now have to “fight like hell” to secure a place in the Europa League for next season.
“I think our main target was to get back into Europe. I think we’ve got to take it game by game, each one as it comes,” he added.
“We’ve got to fight like hell from now until the end of the season and hopefully we can get into Europe again.”
