LOAN WATCH: McCarthy helps Wycombe to victory

By SFC Media Mon 14 Mar Club

Jason McCarthy helped Wycombe Wanderers move to within a point of the play-off places in League 2 with a 1-0 victory at home to Stevenage.

The only goal of the game came 20 minutes from time, as McCarthy’s shot rebounded to Luke O’Nien, who slotted home from close range.

Lloyd Isgrove wasn’t involved and Sam McQueen was an unused substitute as Southend United beat in-form Barnsley 2-0 at Oakwell.

Isgrove was missing for the hosts, as Jack Payne opened the scoring for the Shrimpers in just the third minute, before a late goal from Michael Timlin sealed the win for McQueen’s side.

The win lifted Phil Brown’s men to tenth in the table, one point below Barnsley, as both sides look to try and make a late push for the play-offs in League 1.

Elsewhere in England’s third tier, Jordan Turnbull’s Swindon Town came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Millwall at the County Ground.

Goals from Lee Gregory and Steve Morison handed the visitors a two-goal lead, before a Nicky Ajose penalty gave the Robins hope of a comeback.

And with four minutes of injury time played, Michael Doughty popped up to earn Swindon a point in Luke Williams’s first game as permanent manager.

Coventry City and Jack Stephens kept their hopes of a play-off push alive with a 1-0 win at Blackpool.

Stephens lined up at the heart of the Sky Blues defence and played an important role in keeping the hosts at bay after Marc-Antoine Fortune had given the visitors a 26th-minute lead.

In the Championship, Gastón Ramírez played the full 90 minutes but could not prevent Middlesbrough losing 2-0 to Charlton Athletic on Sunday.

Both goals came in the second half, as Jorge Teixeira and Callum Harriott scored to hand the Addicks a vital three points and stop Boro from closing the gap on Burnley at the top of the table.
