Radhi Jaïdi wants Southampton’s Under-21s to replicate their second-half performance against Leicester for a full 90 minutes at Middlesbrough tomorrow.
Saints fell to a 2-1 defeat against the Foxes last Monday, but produced a stirring display after the interval at the King Power Stadium, nearly coming from two goals down to snatch a point.
Assistant coach Jaïdi wants the players to now harness that display and produce it over the course of a full game, as they travel to Hartlepool’s Victoria Park stadium to take on Boro in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League tomorrow afternoon.
"The second half was really positive," Jaïdi told Southampton’s official YouTube channel of the trip to Leicester. "We saw a lot of good stuff from the younger boys, the stuff that we've been asking them to do week in, week out, and it's so pleasant to see such a performance, but obviously we lost the game.
"We know, and we spoke about it, that we lost the game in the first half with two poor decisions, two poor goals. Hopefully we'll avoid that next game and hopefully that will be a good learning curve for the boys."
Middlesbrough are 12th in the table, two places and four points behind Technical Director Martin Hunter's side, but with a pair of games in hand.
On the challenge he is expecting from the division’s bottom-placed side, Jaïdi said: "A different style of play, slightly similar probably to Leicester, but different players, a different environment and, as I said, that's what you expect on this level.
"The younger boys, we will prepare the game for that and then we'll see how they react, but we're looking for the consistency of what they've been doing, because there's some patches where they do well and some patches where they don't and we want to avoid that a little bit and make it more consistent in the good things that they do."
Jay Rodriguez looks set to feature for the under-21s, as he continues his recovery from foot surgery, and Jaïdi said that the youngsters can learn a lot any time a senior player is involved.
"It is good for the younger boys to see how they act in relation of their attitude and behaviour, and that helps the boys to give them a reference how they’re going to make it to the senior level," he said. "That's a good example for the younger boys to learn from."
