Matt Le Tissier says the next two games will go a long way towards shaping Saints’ finishing position in the Premier League this season.
Saints travel to Stoke City on Saturday before hosting Liverpool at St Mary’s next weekend with both teams currently directly above them in the table.
Le Tissier feels now is the time for Saints to show their ambition for the rest of the season and a positive result at the Britannia Stadium could provide the perfect platform for Ronald Koeman’s men.
“The position in the league table means the next couple of games are key ones really in determining probably where we’re going to finish this season,” Le Tissier told saintsfc.co.uk
Stoke, in eighth, sit two points above Saints going into the game and got one over Koeman’s side with a 1-0 win at St Mary’s in November, so the trip north will be a tough assignment.
He said: “They’re in pretty good form at the moment and they’ve got some pretty potent attacking players so I think it will be a tough game.”
Saints head to the Potteries without a win in their last three games, but Le Tissier believes the team can give a response this weekend.
“We’ve had a bit of a hiccup,” he acknowledged. “The sending off didn’t help last Saturday and we’re going to miss José [Fonte] for this game who’s been a key figure for us.
“That’s a bit of a blow to the team but we’ve bounced back before from bad runs and hopefully we can do it again on Saturday.”
