Shearer: Saints a success in unpredictable league

Alan Shearer OBE says Southampton’s performances this season shouldn’t be overlooked as they aim to match last year’s successful Premier League finish.

The former Saints striker says the erratic results from week to week in the top-flight this season have created an open league table, with plenty of teams finding it tough to be consistent.

But after another transitional phase of the team and with new players coming into the side, Shearer believes a steady season having aspirations to do better is not one to be taken for granted at St Mary’s.

“I think it will be difficult this year to finish better than seventh – I hope they do – but I think they’ll probably finish where they are now,” he told

“It seems as if they get one good result and then the next one’s a poor one and I think that’s a general theme for most of the league for everyone other than Leicester and Tottenham at this moment in time.

“I think it can be looked upon as a reasonable season again when you look at what players have been sold and the players they’ve bought in, and I think Ronald [Koeman] is doing a very good job.”

Shearer spent six years with Saints – four as a professional – and says they’re a club that gave him the grounding he needed to make it to the very top.

“It’s a football club and an academy that should be admired and respected,” explained the Premier League’s all-time record goal scorer.

“Other clubs should actually look at what Southampton do because you can’t ignore it. You can’t ignore the fact of how many players they bring through. Not only this year, last year or five years ago, you can go back 30-35 years at the players they were bringing through so they have a knack of doing it, they do it right.”

Alan Shearer was speaking to the club at the launch of Speedflex gym in Southampton.

Speedflex is a form of high-intensity interval training which offers individuals a real and effective alternative to conventional gyms and exercise. It's suitable for a wide-range of age groups. Find out more at
