José Fonte cut a disappointed figure post-match at AFC Bournemouth, where Saints were beaten 2-0.
And the Saints skipper challenged his teammates to respond.
Fonte lamented the goals that Saints conceded on the night, and was frustrated to see the hosts have more passion in the game than Ronald Koeman’s European-chasing side.
“It wasn’t a good start to the game and it’s a performance we’re not happy with, obviously,” he told reporters after the game.
“They showed more desire and we need to put it right for Saturday because we’re not happy.
"Credit to them, they battled, they fought for their lives and we need to match that in football with a desire and hunger to win games.
“We’re disappointed in ourselves tonight and we need to learn from this and move on to Saturday.”
Saints struggled to get to grips with their opponents in the early stages of the contest, which prompted a tactical move to accommodate four at the back.
“They were clever with the winger from the left who was creating problems from there and after the first goal the manager changed it immediately to try and compensate,” he explained.
“After that I thought we had more control of the game as we started to get the ball more and be like ourselves, but again we’re disappointed with the way that we conceded the goals. It’s not us, we don’t concede these type of goals and we need to learn from it.”
