Jaïdi targets further development in Royals clash

Southampton Under-21s coach Radhi Jaïdi wants the players to build on their second-half performance against Everton last week when they host Reading tonight.

Saints welcome the Royals to Staplewood for a Barclays Under-21 Premier League clash, as they look to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat away to the Toffees.

But there were positives to take from the display after the break at Finch Farm last Monday, with Armani Little's goal sparking a fightback that ultimately fell short.

"We know Everton are a team who are physically big, who have a streetwise style," Jaïdi told Southampton's official YouTube channel. "We played with a younger team, we had younger players and I think their performance gradually went from good to better at the end of the game, and we saw that we scored a goal and created a couple of chances, so that's the positives we took from the game and we hope we'll take it to the next game.

"We want to keep on doing the basics, keep learning. That was a good experience for them. If we do our basics right, that's the most important thing for us."

Jaïdi added: "We know Reading have a little bit of a different style to the teams we normally play against, so we will be ready for that."

Saints have promoted a number of under-18s players into the 21s set-up recently, and Jaïdi is pleased to see that sort of progression in the academy.

"We have a good squad that we can rely on, with some younger boys coming up from the under-18s and hopefully we can give them the chance to perform again," he said.

"Every player looks to go to the next level and I think in this club that's what we do and hopefully we can keep doing that and keep giving a chance to the boys who show a good performance, positive attitude and good learning.

"We've been struggling a little bit with results in the last period. But, as I said, we're looking to develop the younger boys. We will of course work for the results, but the performance of the younger boys is more important for us."
