A crucial time for Saints, says van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk says Southampton have reached a crucial time in their season after impressive results away to Manchester United and Arsenal.

Four points from trips to Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium have seen Ronald Koeman’s men move up to seventh in the Barclays Premier League table.

The win and draw have also extended Saints' unbeaten run to four games, and with West Ham United and Swansea City up next, van Dijk says Koeman's side must take advantage of their confidence being sky-high.

“At the moment [confidence] is very high. We have had good results, four clean sheets and four games unbeaten against good opponents,” said van Dijk when talking to youtube.com/southamptonfc.

“I think now is a very crucial time, with crucial games coming up. We want to continue, we want to keep going and hopefully get good results.

“Confidence grows with wins and with clean sheets for defenders and scoring goals for the attackers.

“We have crucial games coming up right now with West Ham and Swansea. We want to win both games and we will see after that where we stand.”

Having lost to the Hammers just over a month ago at the Boleyn Ground, despite deserving more from the game, van Dijk is eager to come away with all three points this time around.

“It’s going to be a different game, but the only thing that matters for us is winning with a good performance,” the defender added.

“That was one of those games where we thought ‘how have we lost this game?’, but we just need a good performance and hopefully a good win.

“We need to have a look at them again. I haven’t seen their recent games, but we need to be ready for them. Hopefully it will be a win for us this time.”
