Van Dijk: Nomination shows I'm adapting well

Virgil van Dijk says it’s an honour to have been shortlisted for January’s Barclays Premier League Player of the Month award.

The defender played a key role in helping Ronald Koeman’s men keep three clean sheets and three wins to move them into the top half of the Premier League.

The 24 year-old says the recognition shows how far he’s come with the club in a relatively short period of time since his arrival from Celtic in the summer.

“It’s an honour to be nominated and of course it’s great news,” the Dutchman told “It’s all about my teammates and everyone around the club.

“I’m very proud of that. There have been some hard games for me and everything is new so I need to adapt, but I’m very happy at the moment.

“The situation we’re in right now is good and I’m very happy and confident. I just want to keep going and hopefully get even better results and achieve good things this season.

“I learn every game and I’m very happy. I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and keep improving as well.”

Van Dijk played in a three-man defence in the win at Manchester United before Saints reverted to a back four against Arsenal on Tuesday night.

While the defender says they are the games in which he learns even more about himself, he’s happy with whatever formation the manager chooses.

“Those are the games you want to play in, get good results and show your qualities. I’m very happy to have done that with Southampton. I’m very happy,” he affirmed.

“I think that it has shown the qualities we have in the team. We’ve been doing well with a back three and also with four, but everybody is ready for anything.

“We have a great understanding going on with Ryan [Bertrand] on the left and José [Fonte]. It’s been good, but in the end it’s the choice of the manager and what’s best for the team.”
